Bonnawho's Who - Gillian Welch

Official Bio (via All Music):

Gillian Welch first appeared on the folk scene as a young singer/songwriter armed with a voice and sensibility far beyond her years, earning widespread acclaim for her deft, evocative resurrection of the musical styles most commonly associated with rural Appalachia of the early 20th century. Welch was born in 1967 in Manhattan and grew up in West Los Angeles, where her parents wrote material for the comedy program The Carol Burnett Show. It was as a child that she became fascinated by bluegrass and early country music, in particular the work of the Stanley Brothers, the Delmore Brothers, and the Carter Family.

In the early '90s, Welch attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston, MA, where she began performing her own material, as well as traditional country and bluegrass songs, as part of a duo with fellow student David Rawlings. After honing their skills in local open mike showcases, the duo began performing regularly throughout the country. While opening for Peter Rowan in Nashville, they were spotted by musician and producer T-Bone Burnett, who helped Welch and Rawlings land a record deal. With Burnett producing, they cut 1996's starkly beautiful Revival, an album split between bare-bones duo performances -- some even recorded in mono to capture a bygone sound -- and more full-bodied cuts featuring legendary session men like guitarist James Burton, upright bassist Roy Huskey, Jr., and drummers Buddy Harmon and Jim Keltner.

Her sophomore album, Hell Among the Yearlings, followed in 1998. The years following her second release found Welch involved in several soundtracks (O Brother Where Art Thou, Songcatcher), tribute albums (Songs of Dwight Yoakam: Will Sing for Food, Return of the Grievous Angel: A Tribute to Gram Parsons), and guest spots on other artists' albums (Ryan Adams' Heartbreaker, Mark Knopfler's Sailing to Philadelphia). Following the success of O Brother, Welch and Rawlings found themselves in the center of a traditional American folk revival and released their third album, Time (The Revelator), in mid-2001. Steady touring, guest appearances, and the release of a DVD (The Revelator Collection) kept the pair busy, but in 2003 they found time to record Soul Journey, their second release on their own Acony Records label.

Bonnawho's Who - Gogol Bordello

Official Bio:

Gogol Bordello, New York City's legendary Gypsy punk band, returns with the release of "GYPSY PUNKS: Underdog World Strike," their third album of Gypsy punk rock mayhem. Set for release on SideOneDummy in August and produced by Steve Albini (Nirvana, Jimmy Page/Robert Plant) in glorious analogue sound, "GYPSY PUNKS" is an expansive 15-track salvo that expands the band's fusion of Gypsy punk and Slavic stomp with a touch of metal and dub-wise sound effects that pay tribute to the classic sounds of Jamaica. Singer/lyricist visionary Eugene Hutz and the rest of the Gogol collective have attained a new level of musical and lyrical intensity in their continuing cultural crusade to build a bridge between Gypsy music, rock'n'roll and other brands of rebel music from Flamenco to the perestroika punk that blossomed in Eastern Europe during the mid-'80s.

"On 'GYPSY PUNKS' Gogol Bordello speaks proudly to the gypsy, punk, reggae crossover," says Hutz. "Gypsy's have a savage way of making music; they come from a culture where music is the only means of survival. Like reggae, it was created by poor people who have nothing but music; you can feel its universal rebel soul in every note."

As "GYPSY PUNKS" makes clear, the band's multicultural vision isn't static; it's forever expanding and reinventing itself. "My inspiration comes from Ukrainian Gypsy culture, but there's a big difference between adapting and assimilating. Gypsy culture adapts to any new found home, but rejects assimilation and never looses its identity. This also goes for Gogol Bordello. We may tell our story in English, but the story remains what it is, that Cultural Revolution is a contagious state of mind."

The band's omnivorous appetite for rebel grooves is evident throughout the proceedings as is their linguistic versatility as they deliver their message in English, Spanish, Ukrainian and Italian. "Immigrant Punk" blends Gypsy stomp, punk reggae that tips its hat to The Clash, "Think locally, Fuck Globally," rides a wave of jazzy Django Gypsy swing and driving percussion with a balkan beat drum solo played by Hutz on an overturned fire bucket, while "Troubled Friends" blends metal guitar, a one drop reggae rhythm and some unexpected "gypsy dub" effects.

"The dub effects are also analog effects," Hutz explained. "We didn't want the connection with dub culture to be on a superficial level, so we used them on Gypsy beats as well as reggae beats, to pay respect to them and we play them live. The engineer Eayl Medien has worked for Ex-Centric Sound System and is aware of dub culture."

"GYPSY PUNKS" moves Gogol Bordello one step closer to their vision of an international cultural revolution, and while Hutz is clearly the focal point on stage he stresses the point that Gogol Bordello is a band. "It's easy to market my image as the image of the band, but I want to make a larger picture. Gogol is a collective, musically, spiritually and politically. We create an insane party atmosphere to deliver messages of social and political commentary."

"All great bands are a cultural revolution army of creative individuals. Sergey Rjabtzev, the violin player, was a theater director in Moscow for ten years, and now he helps stage our shows. Yuri Lemeshev, our accordion player is a musician of unending imagination. When you hear his surrealistic solos, you can't imagine where the fuck he gets it. Rea Mochiach the bass player is from Israel. He has a background in jazz and rock, as well as drum & bass and electronic music. A lot of the dub elements on 'GYPSY PUNKS' came from him. Oren's guitar playing character is essential to the trademark Gogol sound. Eliot Ferguson, the drummer, is the only sane person in the band but he plays like he's mad."

Gogol's stage show also includes Pam Racine and Elizabeth Sun, triple threat talents who dance, play percussion and lend their energy to the general on stage pandemonium. The girls are part of a larger dance troupe whose many costume changes and energetic antics add considerable flash and fire to the band's highly theatrical presentation.

Hutz came to the United States from Ukraine after an epic seven-year trek through Eastern Europe refugee camps to escape the Chernobyl meltdown. In 1996 Hutz landed in New York City and met the musicians who became Gogol Bordello. (Gogol Bordello refers to Ukrainian author Nikolai Gogol and the bordello with its connotations of erotic pleasure and vulgarity.) The band's international underground reputation grew quickly due to their innovative blend of Eastern European Gypsy and Western culture and a stage show that resembles a three-ring circus of surreal stimuli. Gogol Bordello was quickly embraced by the art world and was often labeled an art band, but Hutz is clear about what Gogol Bordello is.

"I want people to know we are not an art band, or a folkloric band, but a gypsy punk band from New York City playing our own original work that with all the culture clash we don't represent anybody but ourselves. It's our own vision of the socio-political-cultural situation of today."

Live On Stage:

Curious as to what "Gypsy Punk" sounds like - I was too - apparantly it involves a fiddle, acordian, guitar, drums and a pretty intense lead singer. Check out "Not A Crime" of their album Gypsy Punks Underdog World Strike.....

These guys aren't for everyone, but I think they may be one of those acts that a lot of people will be talking about if they happen to catch them. The only show out there to download is this pro shot concert (via Dimeadozen)....

Bonnawho's Who - Apollo Sunshine

Official Bio:

Since the release of their 2003 spinART debut album, Katonah, Apollo Sunshine has thrilled audiences. Their unique and eclectic sound - from avant-garde noise experiment to ultra-melodic pop, to rock, to punk (sometimes all within one song), combined with quite possibly one of the best live shows you will ever see (a controlled rock chaos of pedal steel, guitar, bass, double necked guitar/bass combo, two handtaped-together keyboards/samplers, percussion, drums and how the hell does he play bass with his left hand, keyboard with his right and sing lead vocal?!), have left audiences screaming, dedicated, breathless and unable to hold still!

The New York Times says "...in its own songs, bouncy 60's-style melodies crack wide open, breaking into outbursts of pummeling and feedback before jumping back into the tune. It's all neatly and cleverly plotted, but with a looming chaos that's anything but nostalgic."

Their debut release and live shows garnered incredible reviews nationally. Apollo Sunshine were named one of "THE bands to watch" in 2004 by Alternative Press magazine, voted "Best New Band" by the readers of the Boston Phoenix. The Boston Herald placed them #3 on the top 5 Things To Change The Face Of Boston Arts and Entertainment in 2004 (#4 was the Democratic National Convention). The New York Post called it, "Electronically twisted power pop," and Real Detroit Weekly said, "A wild bonanza of colorful rock candy."

In a further testament to their musicianship, after attending a Leon Redbone gig, they convinced Leon and his band to join them across the street for an "open mic" night. After Apollo Sunshine knocked out a few songs with Leon's band, Leon joined in. Apollo Sunshine proceeded to be the first band in over twenty years (according to Redbone's band) to jam and sing with Leon.

Hailing originally from Boston, MA, Apollo Sunshine formed as a trio while Jesse Gallagher, Sam Cohen and Jeremy Black were attending Berklee College of Music. After their recent string of successful shows opening for the likes of Sonic Youth, Built to Spill, The Walkmen, The Roots, The Decemberist, and My Morning Jacket, the band added guitarist Sean Aylward. With one more guitarist, Apollo Sunshine are able to further augment their already unique approach to pop music making them even more dynamic on stage - switching instruments, singing 3-part harmonies, and recreating the complex arrangements that were so carefully crafted on their debut album, Katonah.

Apollo Sunshine has also taken their act to television, appearing as the house band for Last Call With Carson Daly, and taking over Fox Morning News last winter where they performed, read the mailbag, and got the news anchor to dance to their new song "Phoney Marony."

Apollo Sunshine's dizzying tour schedule has quickly gained them a steadfast audience in nearly every city in the US. A unique "Apollo Sunshine vibe" has been emerging at these shows, transcending the usual rock show experience.

Their new self-titled album, streeting Sept. 13th, is a joint release by spinART Records and Berklee College of Music's student run record label Heavy Rotation. The album was recorded in three weeks with acclaimed producer Brian McTear.

After playing over 300 shows in support of Katonah, Apollo Sunshine is an even more well oiled machine. Their new tracks are more energetic and dynamic than anything previous. As an album, it flows wonderfully for 40 minutes, while individually, each song is a stand out.

Stylistically, the songs take their inspiration from sources as varied as Donovan and Outkast. . . and everything in between.

Just throw on tracks like "Today is the Day" and see if you can stop your knees from bouncing to the Kinks meet rock-a-billy guitar sounds. Then listen to the day-in-the-life cacophony on "Phyllis" and see if you don't just jump right out of your seat. Need a break? Sit back and check out the easy slide guitar on "Phone Sex" or the whispered harmonies on "Ghost."

Apollo Sunshine are true musicians and an American rock' n roll band. They're coming to your town to help you party down, rock you, entertain you and leave you breathless. . . and you best let them. It's a damn good time

Live On Stage:

Apollo Sunshine are another darling of the booming "post-jam" movement (have to stop using that term). They've gotten a lot of love from jamband fans recently, though Brooklyn hipsters have been on to them for a bit longer. They've been hitting the festival circuit pretty hard since last summer, here's a long clip from last year's Wicker Park Fest....

Bonnawho's Who - Franz Ferdinand

Official Bio (via All Music):

Glasgow's art-damaged rock quartet Franz Ferdinand -- named for the Austro-Hungarian Archduke whose murder sparked World War I -- features bassist Bob Hardy, guitarist Nick McCarthy, drummer Paul Thomson, and singer/guitarist Alex Kapranos. In late 2001, Kapranos and Hardy had begun working on music together when they met McCarthy, a classically trained pianist and double bass player who originally played drums for the group despite no prior experience as a drummer. The trio had been rehearsing at McCarthy's house for a while when they met and started playing with Thomson, a former drummer for the Yummy Fur who felt like playing guitar instead. Eventually, McCarthy and Thomson switched to guitar and drums, and the band switched practice spaces, stumbling upon an abandoned warehouse that they named the Chateau.

The Chateau became Franz Ferdinand's headquarters, where they rehearsed and held rave-like events incorporating music and art (Hardy graduated from the Glasgow School of Art, and Thomson also posed as a life model there). The bandmembers needed a new rehearsal space once their illicit art parties were discovered by the police, and they found one in a Victorian courthouse and jail. By summer 2002, they recorded an EP's worth of material that they intended to release themselves, but word of mouth about the band spread and Franz Ferdinand signed to Domino in the summer of 2003. The group's EP Darts of Pleasure, which led some to label Franz Ferdinand "the Scottish Interpol," was released that fall, and the band spent the rest of the year supporting groups such as Hot Hot Heat and Interpol. Franz Ferdinand's second single, Take Me Out, arrived in early 2004. The single propelled them to greater popularity in the U.K. and laid the groundwork for the band's debut album. Franz Ferdinand was released in February 2004 in the U.K. and a month later stateside. Franz Ferdinand's success followed them across the pond; "Take Me Out" became a sizeable modern rock hit, in part thanks to the song's cutting-edge video, which earned the Breakthrough Video award at that year's MTV Music Video Awards. The group's momentum continued with the release of the Michael single and their Mercury Prize win over such artists as the Streets, Basement Jaxx, and. Franz Ferdinand released their second album, You Could Have It So Much Better in fall 2005.

Live On Stage:

I'll admit Franz Ferdinand was the last band who's name I thought I'd see on this line-up - their more of a Coachella act then a Bonnaroo one (or so I thought). This isn't to say that I'm not a fan, I am and I'll really looking forward to checking out their set. Here they are with "Dark of the Matinee"....

These guys haven't been touring much of late, so there isn't much out there right now. But there does seem to be a bunch of pro-shot concert floating around Dimadozen, here's a few....

Bonnawho's Who - Spoon

Official Bio (via AllMusic):

Hailing from Austin, TX, Spoon originated in 1994 as a collaboration between Britt Daniel (vocals/guitar) and Jim Eno (drums) and a rotating cast of supporting players. Their hybrid of indie and punk resulted in a number of Sonic Youth and Pixies comparisons after their 1996 debut album, Telephono. Spoon toured with the likes of Pavement, Guided By Voices, Silkworm, and Archers of Loaf before their Soft Effects EP was released in (1997). Following an ill-fated move to Elektra Records which found them being dropped from the label following the issue of their third album, A Series of Sneaks in (1998), Spoon went the indie route with a handfull of seven-inch singles and the The Agony of Laffitte EP in 1999. In fall 2000, the Love Ways EP was released on Merge, paving the way for spring 2001's full-length Girls Can Tell. The album was a critical success, ending up at or near the top of many best of 2001 lists. Spoon released the more musically adventurous follow-up Kill the Moonlight in August of 2002. The band opted for a bigger, darker sound on 2005's Gimme Fiction.

Live On Stage:

Spoon have become a bit of a critic's darling over the last few years. Here they are performing "The Way We Get By" at Stubb's from this year's SXSW.....

Can't really find much in the way of shows to download, but here's a really recent one (via Dimeadozen)....

Bonnawho's Who - Tea Leaf Green

Official Bio:

Following the 2005 release of their critically acclaimed album, Taught to be Proud, Tea Leaf Green toured North America becoming one of the most exciting and fastest growing rock bands today. Busting out of a revitalized San Francisco music scene, the group has honed their strength as both songwriters and improvisers to catapult to the next level, keeping audiences screaming for more.

Thanks to their dedicated and connected fan base, the band has gone from playing small bars to large theatres in just a few short years by consistently delivering fresh, mind-blowing live performances. After winning the “Song of the Year” Jammy award for Taught to be Proud’s title track, the road warriors plowed ahead with sold out shows in many major markets including Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, New York and, most notably, the historic Fillmore Auditorium in their hometown of San Francisco, CA. The band’s chops earned the respect of their musical contemporaries as 2006 also found the band opening for the Dave Mathews Band, Trey Anastasio, Gov’t Mule, and Bruce Hornsby.

Their latest release, Rock ‘n’ Roll Band (released October 31, 2006, on SCI Fidelity Records), captures lightning in a bottle. Available separately in both CD & DVD formats, the film joins the band for an evening performance at The Fox Theater in Boulder, Colorado and offers an intimate look at a day in the life of a young rock band on the rise. For the DVD, director Justin Kreutzmann, son of The Grateful Dead’s Billy Kreutzmann, provides both a snapshot of where the band is today and clear evidence of where they are headed tomorrow. Part concert film, part documentary, Rock ‘N’ Roll Band balances blazing live performances with private moments of artful reflection and presents the magic that is Tea Leaf Green for all to enjoy. Just one viewing will be enough to assure you that rock ‘n’ roll never died.

For those new to Tea Leaf Green, Rock ‘n’ Roll Band, serves as the perfect introduction to a group capable of producing beautiful, timeless works like “One Reason” and “Faced with Love” that show off their versatile songwriting abilities. Longtime fans will appreciate the band’s mastery of inspired, transcendent improvisation, as evidenced by the triumphant versions of “Jezebel” and “Devil’s Pay”. The CD offers the same epic Fox Theatre show in audio-only format.

Honoring a long lineage of rock bands that have come before them, Tea Leaf Green pays tribute to the past while carving a distinct name for themselves today. It’s refreshing to have something to look forward to…

Live On Stage:

This is a band that a lot of people seem to think they are the next "big thing" on the jam circuit, mainly because like my friend Chilly Jackwater says they have songs that you can sing along to. Here they are with their Jammy award winning "Taught To Be Proud"....

Decide for yourself if they live up to the hype...

Tea Leaf Green - 2007-03-24 - Irving Plaza - New York, NY

Tea Leaf Green - 2006-04-22 - CBGB's - New York, NY

Tea Leaf Green - 2005-09-29 - The 5 Spot - Atlanta, GA

Music Videos:

Nothing in the way of a real music video, but they did put out a live DVD that was directed by Justin Kruetzmann called Rock 'N Roll Band last year - here's "One Reason" from that....

Bonnawho's Who - Feist

Official Bio:

Here are the things you need to know about Feist in order to fall in love with The Reminder: she’s much more than just the torch leaning against the ballad with a lone spotlight on her. In a past life, she was a shouty battle of the bands teen queen in a Calgary punk band. She’s made bashful indie boys swoon with her brash riffs playing guitar with Toronto rock band By Divine Right and her shout-out fronting of Canadian indie rock genre definers Broken Social Scene. She’s stubborn and meticulous about things like the EQ level on the stereo and her long honed guitar tone. She’s been placed in the role of the most unlikely fashion icon, but mostly she’s a tomboy who doesn’t really do make-up. She may be able to warble a bouncy foxtrot like Mushaboom that your grandparents wish they could’ve cranked on their Victrola, but she also breathed life into surreal sock puppets alongside her electro-trash BFF Peaches in Berlin and beyond. The cult-favoured original, raw demos (the Red Demos) for Let It Die and The Reminder included the sound of streetcars rattling along city streets. Onstage she can pivot between being the solo singer captivating a room with her guitar or take on the role of leading a band of 3 brothers with simple confidence.

You can hear all of this on The Reminder, and in some ways it’s more Feist than anything she’s done before. That’s not to say that Let It Die was a lie; quite the contrary. But it was the sound of collaboration and exploration, cocooning in a strange land with one of her best friends (Chilly Gonzales, who returns to lend a hand on The Reminder) and stripping away layers for a musical experiment unlike anything she’d ever done.

Nobody, least of all Feist, anticipated the tremendous response listeners around the world would have to Let It Die. Awards were won. Her name appeared in Best Of The Year lists. Eager bandwagon-jumpers were turned away from festival showcases. All of a sudden, a girl who was barely an unknown secret outside of Canada had top 10 radio singles filtering through malls and grocery stores. Her response? To keep touring. 33 months and 3 continents were covered. The Reminder was written and conceptualized on the way

When the road was finally exhausted, it spit her out at La Frette. A 200 year old manor house in the outskirts of Paris. Our girl corralled her live band – Julian Brown, Bryden Baird and Jesse Baird – and invited Gonzales, Mocky and Jamie Lidell to help harness the sound. They filled the dining room and parlour with a piano, vibrophones, organs, guitars, amps…. shoved two drum kits against the stained glass windows and scattered microphones like mousetraps around wood-floored rooms. You can hear the dogs barking on the tracks recorded live in between bites of their apples and walks in the garden. Like kids at a rock ’n’ roll summer camp, Feist and her talented comrades hung out in their pajamas making The Reminder. In love with being stationary for the first time in 2 and a half years, she woke up every morning and made snow angels in the feather-stuffed duvet on her great big bed. She shivered through several failed attempts to record the birds chirping outside on the old stone patio, thwarted every time by the sounds of unexpected traffic (cars and airplanes) in the isolated area (later, a one-off effort outside a studio in Toronto’s Danforth neighbourhood succeeded in capturing Canadian birdsong for folk ballad The Park).

And the songs came one after another, more than they had expected to finish in this short 2 week window. An album.

Brandy Alexander with it’s sucker-punch melody tumbling over a kick drum heartbeat. The jangly Dusty In Memphis teen dream paean 1234. With perennial collaborator Gonzales, she came up with Limit To Your Love, an ominous slow-burner in which Feist becomes Nico over hard-soul piano chords and Mo Tucker percussion. Live fave Sea Lion Woman, the traditional chant famously covered by Nina Simone, got propelled into the stratosphere with cell phone sounding synths, handclaps and a backing mini-gospel choir. The shimmering, plaintive The Water immerses Feist’s stunning vocals in layers of vibraphone and piano, letting haunted allegorical lyrics about stoic mountains, a clumsy and dangerous sea and little bone piles slowly emerge from the depths. Intuition unspools with fragile fingerpicked guitar, Feist playing call and response with the distant chorus of a crowd.

It’s hard not to be floored by the staggering breadth and depth of the material on The Reminder. You can hear the sound of every facet of Feist– the punk kid from Calgary, the T.O. indie rock poster girl, the Parisian ex-pat who taps the cobblestone. The lost and the found– without the slightest bit of compromise.

It’s Feist simply answering her own questions with questions, and giving in – as she sings so sweetly at the end of The Reminder – to “how her heart behaves.”

Live On Stage:

Is there anything sexier then a girl playing an electric guitar and singing a great pop song with some hand claps in the hook? Here's the lovely Leslie Feist performing "Mushaboom" in San Fran from back in '05.....

Feist is currently the new indie-rock "It Girl" of the moment with her new album The Reminder hitting stores today. Not much in the way of live shows out there, but managed to find a couple (via Dimeadozen & The Pirate Bay)....
